Why every meal matters - and why Now?
America is in a Food Crisis
America is facing a food-access crisis. The country is in the grip of its longest federal government shutdown in history, which has frozen key food assistance programs.
Meanwhile, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supports more than 40 million Americans, has seen delays and cuts in benefits — leaving families, older adults, and people with disabilities without reliable access to the food they depend on.
The ripple effects hit local food banks, everyday households, and anyone who believes every person deserves dignity and nourishment.

Feeding America is the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, connecting people and communities to the food and resources they need to thrive. Through a nationwide network of food banks, pantries, and community programs, Feeding America helps millions of children, adults, and older adults facing food insecurity each year.
With an unwavering commitment to impact and transparency, 98% of all cash and non-cash donations go directly into programs and services that provide meals and support to those who need it most.

What is OT's Role?
Access to food is more than a basic need — it’s a foundation for participation, health, and dignity. Occupational therapy practitioners understand that meaningful occupations begin with meeting essential daily needs, including the ability to safely obtain, prepare, and enjoy meals.
OT practitioners play a key role in supporting food security by helping individuals and communities overcome barriers to eating and meal participation — from addressing mobility and sensory challenges in the kitchen, to connecting clients with community resources, SNAP benefits, and food pantries.
By advocating for systems that promote equity, dignity, justice, and freedom, occupational therapy helps ensure that everyone has the right and the ability to engage in one of the most fundamental human occupations: sharing a meal.

Every Meal Matters Design
Our Every Meal Matters design features a vibrant, modern plate and utensil motif that subtly forms the letters “OT” for occupational therapy. The plate is divided into four sections, each representing a guiding principle from our AOTA Code of Ethics: Equity, Dignity, Justice, and Freedom.
